hoverfrog
I inherited an old pear tree, which this year is covered on good pears. How do I know if they are the sort that you pick hard or those you leave on the tree to ripen? When should I be thinking of picking them? They are large, yellowy green and developing an attractive red blush. hoverfrog
well the answer was last week :(all of a sudden the pears started dropping off and the "buzzy things" are having a field day!
londoneye
Thats the way - all the ripe ones with no holes or nasty bits that you have been carefully monitoring will fall at 1.00 in the morning, thus giving everything that lives in your garden a chance to get there and have a munch up before you get there. All the non-ripe ones, with holes the size of thre grand canyon will stay steadfastly on the tree, so you can enjoy looking at what you can't eat. I always work on a ratio of : 10 nice looking pears means potentially one to eat at end of day !
Ron Avery
The problem with pears is that they do not all ripen at the same time, so you have to monitor and check the fruit on the tree, they will be ripe if they are not hard to the touch and if lifted upwards, come away from the branch easily.
