Do allottments exist in France?

    Hello everyone, I have just moved to a town outside Paris and I would dearly like to work on an allottment, as I don't have a garden I can grow things. Does anyone know if the concept of allottments exists here, indeed what the French word is? I'm not sure if there are websites like the ones in the UK, exchanging tips and sharing plots.....any of you expats out there with any experience in this, I'd be really grateful if you could share your knowledge!

They definitely exist as we live in a small town and there are lots of allotments at the back of where we live.  I would also like to know how they work as we have lots of land that we are considering letting out as allotments?  Shame we are quite a long way from Paris, hopefully someone else will have a bit more information!

They certainly exist in some areas - with purpose built  sheds - very smart. I don't think that there is any other word than "jardin" which usually means a veg garden anyway.
