Ian
We have a fantastic 30 odd metre "hedge" of Hydrangea (spelling? Hortensia en français) along one bank of our river. We have pruned them each Feb-March (me in waders in the river and Mrs Ian on the bank)...kinda deadheading and trimming back to the first spring shoot (there is probably a technical term for this).Anyway 2 years ago we over-pruned with a viscious assault of secateurs - result: no flowers for one year but a spectacular show the next coupled with really dense bushy foliage. How can I get the same show of flowers & foliage as last year without having to wait a year? Many thanks from a gardening newbie. suzy
Prune down to about 3 or 4 buds, Ian, this ensures a neat shape with plenty of flowers.Sue
Clair
If the hedge is thick, could you do half and half?Hard-trim every other plant and swap the following year maybe?
dragonrouge
Our house in Normandie was called Les Hortensias and we had over fifty varieties in the garden together with other acid loving plants. The 'books' on hydrangeas say you should cut out about a third of the old wood each year and having done so lots of water (in a hot summer?)
