New raspberries

I've just bought 2 raspberry plants, Heritage, and Malling Promise, which should fruit at different times. As a total newby to soft fruit growing, can someone with experience tell me if I really have to support them with canes & wire etc?  I thought they were shrubs which would stand up on their own. Also, some books recommend hard pruning after planting but again, has anyone hands-on knowledge they could pass on please? They're both about 18" tall, with lovely fresh green leaves sprouting from the tops of the canes.
