Dc
I'm not sure this is the right place to post but here goes: we were walking the dog here in dept 17 (charente-maritime) and at the end of the walk go through a small forest which normally gives welcome shade from the sun, however we noticed that there were no leaves and consequently no shade. We think they are oak trees so what's going on?
Framboise
They are probably dead which is a shame for such grand old trees. By now they ought to be in their full summer finery. What a pity.
Dc
The trees are about 30years old not great huge oaks!
woolybananasbrother
Do the trees border on a lotissement? Or farmland or any form of development?
Iceni
I blame Agent Orange and wind drift from Vietnam. Perhaps the crop has reached contract size or they are so desparate for firewood that they have to spray living trees.John
cooperlola
I seem to remember some discussion several years ago about the distruction of Turkey Oaks due to some kind of desease/parasite. The only reference I've found thus far on Googling is THIS ONE which seems to suggest that it has not got this far North (or hadn't in '05 anyway.) Chris pp might know? cassis
Just a few suggestions:Sudden Oak Death (a disease affecting certain types of oak, but not all) is now a problem in the UK - which is why you can't import oaks, rhodos and azaleas from the UK to France. Maybe it's here?Trees can die in years FOLLOWING major stress like drought or waterlogging - so it may not be anything to do with events this year.Anthracnose - common in the USA, not sure what it is known to attack in Europe, other than dogwoods.Did the oaks EVER have any leaves this year? Dc
Update: Trees now have leaves but are quite small. A neighbour informs me that a rather nasty caterpillar infestation has been the cause as they were eating the shoots. regardsdc
