dragonrouge
Just had the soil tested for PH values and it has come back at 7.7. I am but an amateur in such matters but I think this is high and it should be around 6.5. Any thoughts as to organic fertilizers or bio fertilizers that I can add to bring it down please? There is a high level of copper as well in the garden (we are in the Vendee) and a high level of phosphorus and a low level of sulphurReally would welcome some advice. Most things grow well save for brassicas and roses many thanks
Pierre ZFP
pH7 is neutral so pH7.7 is very nearly neutral and pH6.5 would be slightly acidic as required for things like azeleas, add well rotted compost and/or horse poo to make more acidic. Brassicas like more alkali (I think) so add lime, to increase sulphur levels, add sulphur
dragonrouge
Thanks I am so grateful plentiful supply of horse manure well rotted just around the corner plus lots of compost at the dechetterie so should be ok. thanks again
ukhostland
Generally, with a soil pH of 7.7 you would have a very hard time reducing it across the whole garden, but if you want to grow plants that prefer more acid conditions you could consider altering just a small area, perhaps in a raised bed. We grew Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Camellias in alkaline soil this way (they have very shallow root systems anyway, so it is not too hard).
