valB
A friend has a magnificent Walnut Tree and close by there are small ones growing as well. They do not want them all and have offrered me two of the smaller ones. When is the best time to dig them up and replant in my garden ?
chris pp
Towards the end of October would probably be best, be warned they have a really long tap root even when small.Chris
Clair
... be warned they have a really long tap root even when small.Chris
How true!We were given a tiny walnut tree and planted it in a temporary raised bed where it grew for a year or so. When Mr Clair decided to dig it up, the tap root was twice as long as the trunk and as he couldn't find the end of it, he ended up cutting it off... [blink](The walnut tree is still growing, two years on [:)])
Hoddy
In these parts the locals recommend St Catherine's Day, November 25th, for planting trees.Hoddy
Kitty
It is supposed to be good luck to plant a tree on St Catherine's Day.
