Sick Palm

The ruler is 45 cm for scale. The palm was repotted and moved last year, and now enjoys full sun. But, the new leaves don't come out very far before starting to open. They also look sick. We've tried not to let it dry out too much, but neither has it been over-watered.

We've been told that palms such as these don't like being moved, but strewth, they move 50 footers in Spain!

Could it be pot-bound?

It looks like a Trachycarpus Fortunie (Chusan palm) They really don't mind being in pots but I think it could do with being in one a bit bigger than the one its in. They don't mind being moved and mine have been moved several times so I cannot see that having anything to do with it. Do you ever give it any feed? What potting mix have you used? They like a nitrogen based feed and a soil based compost as you would find in the uk (John innes no.3) As for the soil based I dont think I have found any here in france and the closest I can find is 'Fumier de cheval' which does work well.

One of mine did do the same thing as yours with the leaves not coming out very far before opening but in time it was ok. They do like plenty of water but as you say not to much, But in a pot they can dry out pretty quick especially in a terracota one. So maybe a larger pot possibly ceramic 'Glazed' some drainage in the bottom like chippings and a new potting mix of fumier from any Brico or Supermarket.

You still have time if you do this now before it gets cold and wait and see next spring and summer. I think it will come good.
