yorkie
We have had a couple of grape vines for a few years now with good success. Last year we potted the "sticks" that we pruned thinking that we may increase the crop in the coming years. Consequently, we ended up with another nine plants which we have subsequently planted. We have now been told that we should plant new vines in multiples of two. Is this correct or not? Can anyone help?Thank you
Tancrède
Wild, unimproved vines are generally diœcious; i.e. they need separate boy and girl vines to cross-pollinate in order to set viable fruit. Cultivated varieties on the other hand are (as far as I am aware) without exception self-fertile. My own single specimen in England produced several hundredweight of fruit every year, and showed no signs of pining for want of company.
