Wood Ash

Does aynone know if wood ash from domestic fire is ok for the garden.I have clay soil.Iknow coal ash will assist drainage, but I'm not sure about wood ash.looked at garden books but no info.Any advice welcome.

Wood ash can add useful trace elements to your soil, and is especially good on clay soils. If you suffer from slugs you can also apply it to deter them. In UK my garden attracts them by the thousands; I can easily collect 80 morning and evening every day in spring. I use bran, egg shells, grit etc around my vegetables, but I'm also very pleased to receive wood ash - it's free and effective.

Thanks for the advice.I would start applying it to the soil now but it is still pouring with rain.Will it ever stop?

According to my neighbour, wood ash is good for lawns containing too much moss. Moss hates the acidic environment created by the ash and gets killed off. I have only been doing it for a month but it seems to be working
