coykiesaol
This is the first year I have grown beetroot - and very good they were too. However I have found that I left four plants in the ground. Not sure how I missed them but I did! When I google for information it says that beetroot should be between the size of a golf and tennis ball. These ones appear to be slightly larger than tennis ball size but not by much.Does anyone know if it is worth digging them up now please? Bearing in mind they have been frozen in the ground. I don't want to spend hours cooking them only to find they come out a soggy mess. I would appreciate any advice.
Hoddy
I don't think these will be fit to eat. I've found that when they are old they are much too woody and stringy to be properly edible.Perhaps someone else may have a wonderful recipe for elderly beetroot.Hoddy
Pierre ZFP
Yes they can get woody but you could try pressure cooking them for a little longer than usual. What have you got to lose?Another way is to peel an grate them (very messy) plus grated onions and make some Borsch (sp?) you know, the Russian soup. Fabulous on a cold day

Patf
Coincidence! I've got some on boiling at the moment - just pulled them this morning. Tennis ball size.I cooked some a couple of weeks ago, just picked, and they were fine, very sweet and tender. I have known them be woody though. Perhaps it depends on the type.
