Keni
Hi, we have several 'shrub' roses - they were here when we bought the place and although I have dead-headed etc., they really need to be severely pruned - they are now in excess of 2 metres high! To make them more manageable, how much can I cut them back and when?
woolybanana
Take the hedge trimmer to them when you like.
NickP
You can take out about a third now to stop the wind blowing them about too much and loosening the roots. Then in the spring just before the sap starts rising cut them back as hard as you like, but remember to try and keep their shape and give them a good feed in the spring.
