I am a bit surprised (and a little encouraged) that the whole subject of lobbying and lobbyistes is seen in such a relatively simplistic light in France.  That discussion on C dans l'air is an eye-opener.

This chap at the centre of the row, Thièry Coste and his activities would not be something that would be of wonder to us, would he?

It all started in the States (as many of the more dubious political activities did) and now it's become a tolerated appendage to political and public life practically everywhere.  I thought it quite delightful that they had to speak about les lobbyistes, les spin docteurs, etc with "quotes" in their voices if not actually waving 2 fingers of each hand as non verbal communication!
