Growing veg in old bidons

The bidons have been in full sun most of the day. The spuds are doing well and are in advance of the ones plated in the main veg plot. Probably because they are warmer than in the ground. Potatoes taste great and we have been having lots of new potatoes from them. If the roots are not disturbed too much they can be put back to let the smallest go on growing.

Mix was of soil and general purpose compost with a handful of general purpose fertilizer. Beetroot and onions have also done well but not leeks or broad beans. Will try carrots if not too late. Flavour has been good with no sign of contamination from the plastic taste wise. One negative is that in the hot dry weather they need a drop of water almost each day or they tend to wilt. Over watering gives visible white lumps around the lenticles on the spuds but ok for use right away but maybe not so good for storing....................JR

Great idea! If any one wants some bidons, I have a garage full if you want them
