I think I may have found the solution to the problem of trimming the Leylandii:

There is only one way of trimming Leylandii -chain saw at ground level.

That will sort out the 'garden thug' permanently.

In the UK I'd agree with you PD, but in France they save the French a hell of a lot of time queueing up at the planning department. [:)]

They are going one by one but we have hundreds of the damned things so it's a work in progress. Slice one off, chop it down enough to fit in the van, and dump at the dechetterie when next going by.

Bonfires frowned on in the village, particularly ongoing ones - and we are 2 doors from the Mairie. When we burned some rubbish left in the house after taking possession, someone called out les Pompiers, but as it was dry stuff that burned in a few minutes, it was out before they arrived!

So far we have removed about 40 m of leylandii hedge, it's a real b****er digging out the roots though.

My plan when all the tops have gone is to hire a mini digger to fetch out the roots. Followed by another good few trips to the tip.
