pip24
I have grown tomatoes before but never grown the Coeur de Boeuf. My question is this. Is the large flower the male flower to fertilise the smaller flowers or are the smaller flowers there to fertilise the large flower?. Do you have to nip any of the flowers out? Also how many can you grow on a truss and how many trusses to a plant?
andyh4
All tomato flowers should be bi-sexual AFAIK. If you are growing under glass I would allow 5 or 6 trusses, outside 4 or 5 trusses. No need to nip out flowers but do nip out any side shoots. The plant will decide how many fruits it can support per truss. Just keep it well fed and watered. kizpip
Marmande (another beefsteak variety) also produces a large flower on the first truss. I always nip it out because it tends to grow mis-shapen and isn't worth keeping.
Pommier
I wish I'd known that! I've got a Marmande (because they taste so good) and the first flower developed exactly as you said - still, I thought I'd under watered or some other error!
