woolybanana
I have rose bush that produces deep purple, single roses, a single version of Richelieu, one of my favourites. The flowers are produced on five leafed stems. But it is now producing the same flowers on seven leafed stems. Are these suckers, they certainly come from very low down on the plant? As they are the same flowers, should the suckers still be taken off or doesnt it matter too much.Advice much appreciated.
Tancrède
Yes - the sudden production of leaves with seven leaflets is a typical sign that a cultivated rose is suckering from the rootstock. The best course of action is to remove it entirely, because such a sucker can - and usually will - outgrow and debilitate the grafted plant, by reason of its superior vigour. woolybanana
Thank you, T. What is confusing me is that the roses on the sucker are the same as the grafted plant when I would have expected them to be different, ie like the rootstock roses.
