woolybanana
It is well known that if a new rose is planted close to an existing rose the former will fail to prosper as the old one has poisoned the ground. My question is simple: How long does it take before an existing rose manages to poison the ground round it for new rose plantings?Anyone know, svp? NickP
Not my experience Wooly, but if you are replacing roses as I have been the last couple of years in my rose beds, remove old shrub completely, dig out the soil about 2 ft X 2ft and as deep, fill with "clean" soil and or compost put in new plant, so far I've had no problems. I hope this helps.
woolybanana
Thank you Nick. I eventually phoned up a UK rose grower and was told that it takes about five years for a rose to poison the ground round about it so my straight replacement of a plant that had been in place for about a year was quite feasible. This I have done, so we shall wait and see what happens.
