Miki
Found an excellent article for owners who do not know exactly what is involved http://www.totalfrance.com/france/fiches.php?fiche_id=1 bonne chance
France can be a most frustrating place in which to run a small business. Rules and regulations change from one day to the next, often without any warning, and vary from one department to another. An extremely common occurrence is to be told one thing by one government body, and to be completely contradicted by another. The author of this piece, Susan Thomson, was shrewd enough to start with those words of wisdom. Many chambre de commerce all over France will view Gîtes and B&B's very differently to each other. Some will tell you there is no need to register gîtes and you only need to inform your Mairie and of course the Hotel des Impôts. Others will insist you inscrire your business with them. For those with more than four gîtes, it is often translated by the C de Com as a business same as with 6 B&B rooms (not 7 as it will then be classed as an hotel type commerce). Those with less can be viewed as non business as far as registering with the C de Com.As she wisely says, every region will see it differently and anyone concerned about their legality should pop along to their C de Com or perhaps better still for an unbiased opinion, a professional advisor. Will
Although there is a lot of good advice in the article, in her attempt to paint with a broad brush the author fails to cover quite a lot of relevant points, particularly where B&B etc is concerned. The fact sheet is aimed primarily at shopkeepers and similar enterprises (which seems to be what she does). There is certainly no national legal requirement for a B&B to be registered per se, though registration is, as Miki says, sometimes required on a local basis. However, if the B&B or gites provides your primary income then it does, in most cases, need to be registered as a business in France.

French artisans walking off site (and going on holiday in August). Rows with the neighbours (because they dug up their yard to put in a drain)....... Wow can't waitbut wait .... Isn't the producer's name the same as Nigel's???? Could they be the SAME person, any similarity is purely coincindental as is any similarity to real life in France
