Coco
Does anyone know what the normal add-on is with these type of sites? I had a call from one that our B&B appears on on Saturday morning, saying that they had had an enquiry for a couple wanting a week in August, but they haven't as yet come back to me. They asked me to check my details on the site to make sure they're correct and pointed out that obviously the cost per night would be higher than I charge as they have to take their commission. Of course that's absolutely fine but having just checked it out, they are quoting £ sterling equivalents to my euro prices, which means that they are putting on around 35-40%!!! No wonder there are no conversions to bookings at that rate. Is that normal? I thought they added about 20-25%.
Cassis
Hello fellow Saint.I haven't any direct experience of these but my impression from looking at some last year was that the mark-up was about 25%. And I thought that was a bit steep! I presume anyone using these sites to find accommodation does not realise that there is a hefty booking charge - after all, it's so easy to use the Internet to find places to stay without having a massive markup added. Coco
So when and why did you get elevated to sainthood Cassis? Was it for preparing meals in this heat and still smiling as you serve them up?
Miki
We are with just a couple of decent agencies. We are asked quiteregularly to sign up for others but the majority simply ask for toomuch commission. We are not charged anything for peak periods, this is beacuse we haveno need for agencies at that time, we explained that if they wanted toput us in their portfollio, then we would not accept any commissionbeing taken from our payements, what they indeed charge the client, istheir business.Out of the peak (July/August) season, one will charge us 8%, the other charges us nothing at all, whatever the season. Cassis
The difference seems to be that the companies take their cut out of Miki's normal room rates, at least such seems to be the case from what was described, while St A's sticks a massive 35-40% mark-up on top! Miki
Cassis,The companies do put a mark up on our prices though. Not a huge amountbut one of them also takes an 8% commission from our rate out ofseason, not a lot really but no commission is paid in peak season andthey both add a mark up on our B&B prices. How much though, I amnot sure.
Cassis
Got you, Greavesie. I suppose I could book a room with you through them and see how it compares! [;-)]
mascamps.com
Depends on the agency. The minimum commission seems to be about 10% on the room price (maybe 8% once you add breakfast).Max is 35% usually. However, that is misleading as they are a wholesaler so they get about 20% and the agent that sells the room gets the other 15% (or perhaps it's the other way around). Cassis
At that kind of rate, I think I can do without, thanks!
Miki
Simply put :We NEVER EVER pay a commission in high season, if any agent booksone (or more) of our rooms, they pay us the client rate, no more, noless.NO commission taken whatsoever. Otherwise, it would just be likewalking down the high street and giving money away !! What the agentputs on top of the normal room charge we want, is their concern.ONE agent (pretty good) only, takes 8% off our low season tarif andsends us the rest. We will not accept paying anyone commission in highseason. As Cassis says 20 to 35% [:-))] I really don't think so !! Ibegrudge even 8% (admittedly out of season only ) and reckon if pushcome to shove, I could stop that as well but...
