Cassis
Another rubbish scam. Or a hopeless spam, maybe. These past couple of days I've had dozens of mails telling me that my loan has been approved. For example:Thank you for your loan request, which we recieved (sic) on 08/11/06,we'd like to inform you that we are accepting your application, bad credit ok, We are ready to give you a $260,000 loan for a low month payment.Approval process will take only 1 minute. Please visit the confirmation link below and fill-out our short 30 second form.www.gonein.com Anyone any idea what that load is all about? [blink] I had a look at the site - it looks like a crappy mortgage broker in the USA. And at the bottom of the page is the proud boast about their anti-spam credentials etc!!!Still, nice to know that I can get a $260,000 loan as "bad credit ok". What do you reckon my low repayments might be? [Www]And who on earth do they get to write this stuff? I mean, this links to a USA site, for goodness sake, so you'd think they could write half decent English, wouldn't you?

Cassis
Ah, could be. I never went as far as to fill in anything on the page in question, but it may well have led to a request for credit card details. You're probably right. That quarter of a million can stay on ice. Cat
I got this one today, quite sweet really, if you like a bit of Jane Austen, but what on earth is it for? Cassis
Ah, yes, Cat - I recognise that one, or some others very like it. In fact, I'm hoping to collect the complete works for free in this way. All I have to do is cut and splice it all together in the right order [Www]. Cat
I have the complete works here Cassis, and guess who they're published by? Random House. How funny that the spammers are using a random text generator, just a coincidence, or are they aiming at irony do you think?
Dick Smith
Years ago I was teaching English to a class of 11-year olds and we had a play at making found poems - you take down half-a-dozen books and open each one at random, and pick a line at random and write these down to make a poem. One kid (the only child who ever bit me) liked hers so much that she entered it into a poetry competition - and won. Is true.Perhaps she has now found a new vocation? Cassis
Didn't Mr Bowie claim to something similar when songwriting in the 70's? Maybe he's behind these emails.
Dick Smith
I wouldn't be surprised at all. Perhaps we are supposed to read them in a modified state of awareness?
Pickles
For those who are unaware why the spammers insert such random quotations; it is generally an attempt to get the email past some spam filters which use scoring systems based on content analysis. These types of filter look for messages which contain the usual suspect words. If the message content is short and contains one of the target words, then the filter will give it a high spam score on the basis that such a short message containing a target word is likely to be spam eg "buy your viagra here". If however, the message contains only one target word in amongst lots of other words, then it will give the message a lower score, on the basis that you might just mention the word "viagra" or whatever in a normal extended conversation and therefore the message COULD be legitimate.Pickles
