cassis
Anyone thinking of setting up business running a gite or B&B in France might be interested in this book on Amazon:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Running-Gites-B-Bs-France/dp/1905303300It is up-to-date and extremely well written and full of good advice, unlike most of the tripe I read on the subject some years ago. Will
Strange that it doesn't seems to be available from the shop on this site - unless this is the same thinghttp://www.livingfrance.com/france-shop-france-bookshop--4943Maybe there are so many experts on the subject offering advice on this forum that Archant doesn't think there would be a demand for a book [6]...(hang on, doesn't one of them use the forum name jo taylor?) Jo Taylor (the author) does post on this forum (unless she has a namesake).
Will
All the better reason to sell it here, I would have thought, rather than let Amazon take the profits.(yes, I did know about the similarity of names between the author and a forum user)
cassis
Both are Jo T's books; I've no idea why the new B&B/gite book is not already on Archant's booklist, since the other one is. I had not even thought of checking on this site.Oh, God - the Archant list includes the simply appalling, simply atrocious Simple Guide to French Etiquette and Douanes. Pierre ZFP
This looks interesting, I think I will get it for 'friends-of-friends' who are starting up a gite business in September this year. I think they will need all the help they can get. They bought a house and 2 gites in the middle of nowhere and then sent me an email saying what they had done saying 'are there any taxes or anything we should know about?' Talk about the Rose-tinted specs. They also have 2 kids, 13 and 6. Oh did I mention that none of them speak a word of French? Well, they are keen and enthusiastic, I can only wish them well. Will
Come in Pierre - be honest. When anybody refers to friends you know it is really them... So these 'friends' - are they coming for the free health care and the old-fashioned values too? But don't worry, they can of course pull out of the sale if they change their minds. woolybananasbrother
I sincerely admire these people and I think we should too and give them all our support. It is the same spirit of adventure which built Empire (NB, I did not say conquored)[6]
cassis
What on earth has founding a shopping catalogue got to do with running a gite or B&B?
woolybananasbrother
Field agents had the while of Tanganyika as their territory. Wow! Order for Mrs Hippo, tooth brush and skin conditioner. Collect. Or sunhats for giraffes. Yeah
Jo Taylor
Hello, yes it's me... [:$] [:$] [:$] [:$]I have told the publisher it hasn't appeared in the Living France shop yet - I don't have any personal involvement in publicity / marketing or selling, but it's only been available for a month or so. cassis
When I read Pierre's message it made me immediately think of a couple of the warnings in your opening chapter ... Any openings in publicity/marketing/selling, I'm available part-time (and off season only).
Kitty
Is it the latest edition? Does it include all the latest laws?Jo - how long did it take you?
Pierre ZFP
Hey Jo, when I buy a copy can I send it to you (with an SAE of course) for signing?
cassis
The rare, unsigned copies are much more valuable, Pierre.Jo's a hell of an artist, BTW - her illustrations are terrific.
Jo Taylor
Cathy said:Is it the latest edition? The one that's the title of this thread is newly published.Does it include all the latest laws?As long as nothing drastic has sprung up between last summer and now... I just caught a hint of the proposed obligatory registration which was announced in August and included a caveat to that effect. Jo - how long did it take you?A lifetime m'dear - I learnt to write aged four and have been doing it ever since. And the learning curve for the practical aspects took me all the years I've had a gite, and all those when I used to do B&B. Seriously, though, it's very difficult to say - I wrote it over a period of around six months but was doing a lot of other things at the same time. One can bash out half a chapter in a day then spend three days researching one paragraph...Pierre said:Hey Jo, when I buy a copy can I send it to you (with an SAE of course) for signing?Of course. Just pm me when you're ready. And Cassis said more things to make me blush! [:$]
