I'm hiring a gite and in the contract I have been asked to sign is this clause;

Le client est responsable de tous les dommages survenant de son fait. Il est tenu d’être assuré par un contrat d’assurance

type villégiature pour ces différents risques.

Is this some sort of holiday insurance?

Would it be included on my house policy?

You are supposed to take out insurance not the gite owner  ??? the French way

 

   The customer is responsible for all damage caused by himself. It is required to be insured by an insurance type holiday for these different risks.

Most certainly our french home insurance covered us when renting appts and gites and that is how it is. I really thought that they all did it.

No idea what holiday makers from the UK do and how holiday insurance works.

Look at your home insurance contract or call them.

It is part and parcel of all (most?) French house insurance policies under a section entitled "Villégiature".
