ali-cat
I've just received an email from a friend, with a question that I cannot answer - please help!! [:)]They have just had a new pool liner fitted, the pool is 3/4 full & the water temperature is 16 degrees. Can they add the winterising chemicals & put the pool to bed for winter or do they need to balance the PH & Chlorine levels first? Thank you. Poolguy
It depends on which way you want to go with your pool. But always, always, always you (there's an echo in here), must balance the pH to between 7.2 -7.6 and then you can begin to sanitise.I would say that it is a good idea to continue to circulate using the bottom drain until the water temperature is at or below 10° C so that algae will not multipy as they do in higher temps. You should dose with stabilizer to 50 ppm and choc with Chlor to about 5ppm (no more at this stage). With that you can decide if you want to put in winterising chemicals or not. Personally I would not as it is introducing a whole host of poisonous compounds which do not break down very easily, so they stay in your water. I prefer to use temperature to control the algae and choch levels of chlorine to control bacteria and paricites it does the sam thing and you are not left with a 'le bon chemical souppe'.If you want to read my article on Winterising then send me a PM and I'll send it to you, it will be on my new website which will be launched in the new year.
