Jon 1
Is it really the case that French residents can go directly to a specialist of their choice without first contacting their local doctor? If so what amount or proportion of the cost has to be met by the individual concerned? How easy is this in real terms? Owen
Hello Jon, Choice of doctor and specialist is normal in France and it is not obligatory to have a referral from a GP. Costs. You do have to be careful here. Most doctors, specialists, hospitals and clinics adhere to the "Tarif de Convention" which lays down the cost of treatment from routine visits to major surgery. Such people are described as "comventionnee" and are in the large majority. There are a few who are not and can charge what they like. These are "non-conventionee". According to the tarif a visit to a specialist is priced at approx 30 Euros. However it is possible and indeed probable that a specialist (conventionnee)will charge more than this as long as it is "tactful and reasonable" to do so. This extra charge is known as a "depassement". However CPAM will only refund 70% of the Tarif. They will refund a lot less than this if you go to someone who is "non-conventionnee". So if you have a "mutuelle" or "police complimentaire" it is worth checking to see if these "depassements" will be covered.Peter Owenpjowen@rivieramail.com
