Hi,

I too am a nurse moving to France (81) in about 6 weeks. I have been doing some research and am slowely gathering information.

The NMC is a good place to start. They have an overseas dept (listed on their website) who can provide you with a verification certificate for about 35 - you give this to your potential employer as proof (with your statement of entry) of your registration. If you contact the college where you trained, they can also provide a verification of training. The NMC told me that their certificate is pretty mandatory for getting work abroad.

In terms of regulating bodies, apparently there are several -I don't know how to find out where these are - I imagine the easiest thing to do is to go to your local hospital over there and ask. I think if you asked the NMC, they might be able to advise you too.

The other thing is that (as far as I am aware, I could be out of date on this) it is only the RGN qualification that is currently recognised. There are reciprical arrangments for RMN and RMHN - if this applies to you, you can get info from the NMC about this.

My partner is a nurse too and has been living in France since November - playing rugby and studying French. When he got there, he visited the local hospital and met with someone from the school of nursing. She told him that once his French improved, she felt sure she would be able to find him work. She also said that the EU now provides free French tuition for other EU nationals wanting to nurse in France.

My impression is that the recruitment problem is at least as bad as in the UK - agents like ADECCO advertise nursing jobs on their website and I know that there are many Spanish nurses working in France. It seems that inevitably, the language is the crucial key to being employable and competent, particularly for an RMN,such as myself !

Hope this is hopeful, am writing it during a night shift so hopefully it makes sense. If I think of anything else, will write again.
Good luck !

Debbie.
