Long Term Lets

We are looking for a 3 bed long term let in the South Correze/North Dordogne from mid July 07.  Ideally we would like an unfurnished property but would be happy with furnished if their was possibility for storing our furniture in an outbuilding ie a barn.  We have looked on various web sites for long term rental but so far have been unsuccessful!  Someone told us that the minimum period for renting unfurnished in France is 3 years; is this true?

Thanks in anticipation for help,

Sue

Hi Sue

Yes the minimum rental period for unfurnished property is 3 years but there is a get-out clause whereby the tenant can give 3 months notice to the landlord and then leave. Useful if you discover you hate the place or the locality!

Beware though that if the property is described as 'vide' then not only will it be empty but there might well be no built-in cupboards and no kitchen - as in our case. The legal requirements for rented property are v different here from the UK.

We found our rented house via the small ads in the local newspaper for Brittany - perhaps if you can discover the local rag for your area you might be able to do the same.

Hi Sue, thanks very much for taking the time to reply with good advice, we take on board what you say re the '3 year rental', and especially the vide info.  We plan to go over to the area in a couple of weeks and will search through as you said local papers and adverts in local shops.  If anyone out there knows of anyone who has any other information or knows of any private lets please get in touch.  All advice, good and bad is welcome.

Thanks again,

Sue

I found a three bedroomed house to rent in Thiviers, just north of Perigueux, on www.dordogne-on-line.co.uk.  It was furnished but the English owners were happy to remove the furniture if I wanted as they had a barn at their own property.
