Perlats
Please can somebody tell me what a "scale and polish" is in French and if possible what sort of cost to expect for such an appointment with a hygienist? Thanks
Hoddy
Dental hygienists and qualified dental nurses do not exist in the French system so you'll have to get this done by a dentist. I'm afraid I don't know the term for scale and polish though.Hoddy

Perlats
Thank you everyone, I now know everything I need to know to make an appointment, including the fact that there are no hygienists which I hadn't realised.
Teamedup
So what is a dental hygienist and why would you use one rather than a dentist?
Perlats
Hi Teamed upWell, I wouldn't necessarily use a hygienist in preference to a dentist, it is just that in the UK that is generally who does that type of treatment within the dental practise. More "nurse" than "doctor" stuff. I don't know if that is all they do, but it is my only experience with them. I am quite happy to be seen by a dentist instead but wrongly assumed I would have to ask for a hygienist's appointment. As the cost in the UK is higher (£30) it is not a cheaper option despite dentists presumably being more highly trained than hygienists.Just another subtle difference between countries. Is there a "smiley" for Gallic shrug?
Teamedup
Thanks. The only place I have seen dental nurses who have done 'something' on their own, is when my son used to see the ortho dentist. I'm not sure what these nurses did, he used to see them before the ortho dentist and us parents were in the waiting room.
