Trigeminal nuralgia

Sorry if I spelt it wrong. Anyone else suffering from this. Just been diagnosed and told it is the most painful thing you can have. Got the painkillers and anti convulsants, lets see if they work.

John always says I am a 'face ache' - well you have to smile at life don't you?

A friend of mine has just had this diagnosed and she's in misery. She's starting the round of anti-epileptic drugs as they can work but it's a question of finding the one that fits the person and it may take time. You have my sympathies.

Another friend was told she had it, held off on starting the drug therapy until she had a wisdom tooth (impacted and intermittently infected) removed. The pain went away. This was 2 years ago.

A third friend's mother was diagnosed and it does seem that she has solved her problem with... one of the anti-epileptics but I can't remember which. I could find out if you want.

There can be other reasons for this sort of pain. Tension, trapped nerves etc. I am wondering if (in the UK anyway) trigeminal neuralgia is suddenly a fashionable diagnosis. And the only people who I've heard about having it are all women. But I'm sure you'll have explored the other possibilities because it's obvious from your posts that you're not daft!

For the friend that had a wisdom tooth problem, I did some research and found a trigeminal neuralgia help group based in the US. I've been told there's a UK one too. I expect you've already googled them but if you haven't, it might be informative.

Good luck.

You have my deepest sympathy suffering from this awful affliction.  The pain is very wearing and can only be understood by someone who has also suffered from it.

I was prescribed an anti epilepsy drug for mine called Carbomazapine which worked really well for me.

When i was in the UK I was an acupuncturist and I have treated people and also know of others who were treated for TN very successfully.  It maybe a route to look at if conventional medicine is not helping you.

I was pretty insistent that it was a tooth as it 'annoys' the nerves in the affected teeth but the thing that really made me think is that a tooth was playing up which not only has no nerve, it has no bone above it as it had to be removed when I was quite young. Strange feeling - phantom tooth syndrome. Dentist confirmed that this is typical. All the teeth have been checked. xrayed and are fine.

I have been prescribed Rivotril - clonazépam. It is making me very dozy but I had a good nights sleep and I have not had to take the extra painkillers prescribed. I normally take painkillers (different types) 3 to 5 times a day. The ear has started up but I have been in the car with the aircon on and that always gets me going. I know that the body gets used to drugs so the side effects wear off, I kept falling asleep in the car but as I was not driving it did not matter. I will  not drive till things sort them selves out.

TN is more common in women and also normally on the right side. I have it on the left side.

I have had acupuncture for a knee problem which worked very well, is there any way I can find out a practitioner in Northern Lot.

Thanks for all your kind words, stops me feeling so isolated.
