CeeJay
Am I right in thinking that a hip replacement operation and associated physiotherapy treatment in France would be fully reimbursable from CPAM?
idun
I think that maybe it used to be, but I am sure that they only reimburse 80% and then there is the forfait journaliere etc to pay. You may even need their accord to get it done.
allanb
I had a hip replaced a couple of years ago and I would be happy to post details of the CPAM reimbursements, but I was already over 65 at the time, which may make a difference.Let me know if you'd like the information. Patf
Depends too on your type of health cover (implied by Alan's post) and whether your generaliste has referred you.I think I had to pay something towards the physio as we didn't have top-up insurance at the time. Then there's the nurse who visits you at home for anti blood clotting injections.
NormanH
It may also depend on where it is done (hospital of clinique) and by whom .Some surgeons charge up to double the costs paid for by the CPAM ' depassement des horaires' in private cliniquesThere was a recent article in the magazine 'le Point' on the best hospitals in France for certain operationsThe CHU in Montpellier came out as 9th best in France for hip replacements, and it is public[:)]

But they are required to warn you before you make any commitment.
CeeJay
So how would it be possible to get this operation done at this place? Surely it is up to your doctor to specify when and where?
NormanH
The CHU of Montpellier is the main group of teaching hospitals in the city.Your GP will refer you to a consultant surgeon, but you have a choice of specialist if you choose to exercise it.As you are in the Hérault I would suggest you ask if you can go to somewhere like St Eloi (one of the group) I would avoid the private cliniques such as the Millinaire at Montpellier, St Privat at Béziers or the clinique Causse at Colombiers, not because they aren't good (they are) but because you original question suggested that cost might be an issue. In addition to the costs of care which are met by the CPAM and your Mutuelle (if you have one) there is the cost of a single room if you desire one. In my case (a big operation, but not on ther hip) this was covered for up to 30 days by my Mutuelle at the Hospital (daily cost 45 euros), but not at the nursing home, which is usually necessary after hip replacements. At the moment my bill for the room is around 2000 euros in the Nursing home. I paid around 1250 Euros in the Hospital, but that was reimbursed by my Mutuelle, which also covers the 18 Euros a day charge for food etc, not covered by the CPAMA double room is usually free, but there are disadvantages in sharingThere will always be the 18 Euros a day, plus telephone and TV charges if you take those options .What I am unfortunately unable to tell you is whether the surgery is re imbursed at 100%You need to look up your particular operation at http://www.ameli.fr/accueil-de-la-ccam/outils/actes-frequents/index.php
CeeJay
NormanHThank you for that comprehensive reply, just what I was looking for. The main reason for posting this query is that we do not have,as yet, a mutuelle, and therefore trying to justify getting one balancing out the costs involved. Unfortunately I am getting to the age that things start to fall off or not work so maybe that alone can justify it!Montpellier is about 45minutes from us so the St Eloi option may be good.
