Bernie
Hi could anyone advise on how my father should request reimbursement for a cancer operation on his nose he had in July 17. He moved to France in Jan 2017 but only received his Vitale card in Nov 17, not knowing the process. Thanks
EuroTrash
You don't say what his access route to healthcare is. Is he on an S1? If so when was it issued by the UK? Or is he early retired? Has he talked to CPAM?If he hasn't talked to CPAM yet, I think that is what to do first. It may be that CPAM will agree to simply backdate his ouverture de droits, and in that case he should get a partial or full rembursement from them. If they only give hime partial reimbursement then I guess he would be liable for the remaining costs himself. Hope that helps.
Patf
Did your father have a european health card before his carte vitale? If so he might get reimbursement from the UK.
BritinBretagne
As he wasn’t in the system he will only get reimbursed if he used a valid EHIC although technically they are for visitors only, not residents.
EuroTrash
EHICs being for visitors, it would be unusual for a visitor to be diagnosed with cancer whilst on a holiday or business trip, and more unusual still for him/her to have treatment in France. If you discover while you are on holiday that you have cancer, you would normally go home for treatment. For a UK resident to arrange this kind of treatment abroad would require pre-authorisation from the NHS, which would involve discussion with your GP.It is possible for CPAM to backdate the start of cover in special circumstances. If for instance he had an S1 dated prior to the operation but he simply hadn't registered it, it should be possible for everyone agree to backdate cover to the start date of the S1. But it would all depend on the circumstances, which the OP has been very brief about..
