Local dial up number for internet

Recommended Posts

Can anyone let me have a local dial up phone number for a pay as you go non-bband internet provider in France, 50480.

We still have the dial up AOL pay monthly subscription in France. I don’t want to cancel this until I have found another way to connect.

For our next few visits over the next 3 months I would like just a simple pay as you go service, so how do I find a number to get the modem to dial?

Once I have managed to do this I will cancel the AOL monthly subsciption and wait until we are there longterm in March before doing bband.

Thanks

Diana

If, while logged on to the internet with AOL, you go to one of the major French ISPs like http://www.tiscali.fr http://www.wanadoo.fr or http://www.free.fr you can sign up on line. Certainly with Tiscali you can do this while in UK if you want, take a note of all the connection details, then set up your connection manually in France.

I'm also in dept 50, and my pay-as-you-go Tiscali dialup number is 0860 155555, but you will need to have set up an account, with username and password, before you can connect with that number.

Thank you to you both I have just registered with Tiscali.

A question for Will, while registering I got as for as page 4 out of 4. This is were you configer the set up for an Apple or PC. When in France I will have to be on line to do this. Will I be able to use the Tiscali number you gave me or should I do this via AOL.

Thanks

Diana

You can set up a Tiscali connection manually, while off line, with the username, password and dial-up number which you will have been given or chosen while signing up. Exactly how you do this depends on what version of Windows or other operating system you are using. Mazan's instructions on setting up a PC for use in France, which can be found in the FAQs section of this forum, http://forums.livingfrance.com/shwmessage.aspx?ForumID=5&MessageID=3734, should explain it fully. The e-mail server names you need for Tiscali are pop.tiscali.fr (pop3 or incoming mail) and smtp.tiscali.fr (smtp or outgoing mail).

Once set up you choose Tiscali rather than AOL to connect to the internet. It's several years since I had an AOL account, but I think AOL still uses its own browser and e-mail program rather than the Internet Explorer and Outlook Express that just about every other ISP recommends, so there may be a bit of learning for you to do if you are used only to AOL. To connect you may have to go to 'connections' or 'dialup' in Windows rather than just clicking on AOL's desktop icon. Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable about AOL can answer?
