IAN_S
We tend to watch it in the early evening when there can be some good programmes and the news at 1800 Paris time, mainly to improve our French but there is the culture aspect as well.As Dick says there are also some boring discussion programmes but quite honestly there are sometimes when I browse the Sky EPG and can't see anything worth watching at all out of 100's of channels! There is some good content on the national channels apart from dire game shows that are not only on French tv, UK as well I think!Incidently, those with a numerique receiver other than a digibox can now get 6 national channels on Atlantic Bird 3 for free although these are said to be satellite feeds for the new TNT service so how long this will last is anyone's guess. Ron Avery
The TV 5 on Sky is not the same channel as channel 5 on French TV, Channel 5 becomes ARTE in the evening in France, and you can you can only get TV5 on a Sky subscription anyway so (legally) it is not available to us here anyway. Dick Smith
Does TV5 have Le Maillon Faible, with that scary woman? I watched that for hours because I had translated it as the flimsy swimsuit...
BJSLIV
Ron , you are confusing France 5 (Previously known as La Cinq) with TV5. France 5 is the third channel from France Television, it would have been their fourth channel if they hadn't privatised TF1, and they couldn't call it France 4, because many people associated Canal+ with 4. TV5 is the equivalent of BBC World and spreads "the best" of Francophone TV throughout the world. It comes in different packages, for different parts of the world, and the European version is sometimes slightly different to the domestic version shown within France on digital satellite.France 5 as you correctly say shares it's terrestrial channel with Arte, the Franco German channel, but if you want to watch France 5 at night that too is available on digital 24 hours a day.Arte is itself a wonderful creation, being the fruit of M Mitterands desire for closer cooperation with Germany, it has some interesting programmes, though it can be weird watching an American film, dubbed in german, with French subtitles. You can also switch between French and German soundtracks on some programmes. To summarise, the good news is that those of you who want even more Question Pour un Champion, can get TV5 legally in france by subscribing to a digital pacakege such as Can Sat, TPS.Now when M Chirac's planned rival to CNN gets going........
