Angie
Currently we do not have anywhere to store large quantities of wood for the woodburner (hopefully storage will be built ready for next year). Does anyone know if its reasonable to ask the local guy whether we can have a "bootfull" of wood or ask for a specific amount, say 20 or 30 euros worth (that's if we can ever find the place open!). We are only at the house for about a week during the winter months so don't need too much. Just wasn't sure if it was the done thing! Thanks all. Quillan
You can ask but I doubt it but then and again you never know. Can you not store it in the garden and throw a tarpaulin over it for a bit till your wood store is built?
sid
During our first year of owning our house here, and before we actually moved, I did exactly this when we visited for the odd week in the cooler weather. I went to the local wood supplier (not the one I use now though) and got a boot full of wood each time; about 30€ then. He had wood piled in "mountains" rather than bound in steres. I would think that if your guy has stocks at the moment then you could buy a stere, cut the bindings and take the load provided you took it all which may take more than one trip with a saloon car. He'd be unlikely to deliver a single stere I think. As Quillan suggests, it doesn't need sophisticated storage, so a simple cover would do, and you see the wood in the fields with just a cover on the top but with the sides exposed to allow drying. mint
Actually, if it's only for a week, why don't you just buy a pack of wood from the supermarket? As I remember, it was only 5 euros each; the packs are a manageable amount and weight and you can keep them indoors. Also, the wood is cut into smallish size pieces (no sawing, no splitting), are very well seasoned and burn easily, giving off a lot of heat. When we were in our first house and before we got organised with storage, baches, etc. we used to buy the wood packs sometimes, if only because they were such an easy option.I think for short term use, it's sensible to make things easy for yourself, you are on holiday after all, aren't you?As they say, don't sweat over the small stuff. Enjoy your week in the winter and maybe get organised for the following year.
Angie
Haven't seen the packs in the supermarkets (obviously not been going to the right ones!) but they do sound like a good option so will keep an eye out for them. Having said that, got a reply from two wood suppliers, one just outside Quillan the other in Lavelanet. Both can let us have a stere (minimum) which we can hopefully transport in our car. Although apparently they weigh 500kg!! They have both offered to cut into large or small logs so that's useful. Cost 70 euros per stere (1m3).Looks as though this winter will be cosier than the last! thanks all
mellybelly
Hi Steve,As well as the supermarkets the Bricolarge's have them from about September time, but when we looked last year they were about 7-8 Euro a pack. We have used them for our occasional winter visits, No mess, no fuss and they burnt well. Not as cheap as getting a whole load though., but occasionally needs must.Best wishes Mel.
