Loiseau
Sorry, this is a computer Q rather than satellite TV etc etc Q, but I wonder if anyone can help with a strange problem. For the last 24 hours, I have noticed that if I want to whizzily delete something by backspacing, for example, or conversely to insert a lot of spacebar spaces, it goes v-e-r-y- s-l-o-w-l-y, one space at a time, whereas before it used to gobble up backspaces faster than I could blink (or put in hundreds of spaces, using spacebar) while I held down the appropriate button. Can any of you super-techies out there tell me what I can do to restore normal service? Many thanks in advanceAngela
Gyn_Paul
Have you added any software recently? Or are you running any sort ofnew security programme in the background? Sounds like something ischewing up your RAM and keeping chunks of it occupied.p
Ecossais
Angela,Try - Start | Control Panel | Keyboard. You should be able to adjust the character repeat delay time with the top 2 sliders. The top one varies the time for the first character, for example a dot, to appear on the screen. The other slider varies the time for further characters to appear on the screen if you've held the key down. The default setting seems to be top slider one position from the right and other slider fully to the right, but obviously you can adjust these to suit yourself. You can also change the cursor flash speed with the bottom slider. Loiseau
Hi Ecossais, [EDIT: Just cut my waffly answer that crossed with Ecossais reply, but is now superfluous] You're a genius! That's done the trick. Many many thanks to you bothAngela
Gyn_Paul
Angela,Sorry to rain on your parade, but if you didn't change the keyboardparameters then something else did. I suspect this pop-up thing isindeed the culprit. If nothing else untoward happens then - good, however if it is just the tip of the iceberg, and other wierdys appearthen you might want to Roll the system back to a date before you sawthe pop-up [CONTROL PANEL/SYSTEM/SYSTEM RESTORE].p
Loiseau
Yes, I am rather holding my breath to see what happens next...Thanks for this next suggestion though, Paul. I shall keep it up my sleeve in case of a rash of fresh glitches.A
Ecossais
Angela, Glad to hear your PC is back to "normal". Paul's right, if you (or someone using the PC) didn't change the keyboard parameters, something else found it's way into your PC and did it. If you haven't got up to date firewall and anti-virus software, I'd recommend you invest in some fast.
