HELDAV
We're beginners at this, but if you don't ask you don't get.We have a maison secondaire which has a de-activated phone line. We intend to get this re-connected through France Telecom. We then intend to get a laptop computer - it's main function will be for emails and, importantly, to access our emails in UK. Our UK provider is BT Internet Pay as You Go. Our WWW requirement will be very occasional and we don't need Broadband. That's it! Assuming we have the phone line and the computer - what do we do next? Do Wanadoo have a Pay as You Go service in France? Will it be necessary to change our UK provider? All advice, hints and tips will be very welcome. Ssc
Just a thought - can you not set-up the laptop to dial the UK BT PAYG number from France prefixed 0044. If its just for e-mails it will be cheaper (if actually possible) than setting up a French ISPTony
BJSLIV
can you not set-up the laptop to dial the UK BT PAYG number ?Why would you think that dialling a UK number (I don't actually think it is possible) would be cheaper than making a local PAYG call in France? You could set up a PAYG account with Alice, or Wanadoo and just pay for the time connected at local rates. Or you could for example sign up with Alice for 10 Euros a month and get unlimited access from 5:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Saturday plus another 15 hours to use anytime during the week. It all depends how much time you need.http://abonnement.aliceadsl.fr/adsl/signup.phpYou will in anycase need to migrate from Btinternet unless you have a trusty friend who can lgo in as PAYG from the UK at least once every three months, otherwise the account will be closed. You will not be able to send emails from your old address from France, unless by some quirk you can sign in from abroad.
Tarrot
Sign up for FREE or FREESURF (or both, for that matter). You can do it while in the UK (google will get you there). Take all the info (logon codes and passwords) with you and set up a dial-up connection when you are in France. It's not "free", of course - but it's not that expensive either, if all you want is email.AK
Dick Smith
I agree with AK. I use Free.fr and simply have it set up as a location on my laptop. There are issues with Free, but many of these are down to poor quality FT lines...
