Which French ISP and voip

I'm moving to southwest France at the end of October and would be grateful for a bit of advise on French ISPs.  I have seen most French ISPs try to rent or sell you their own modem/router. I helped a French friend install his own WIFI router on to his neuf telecom set up and found the ISP very reluctant to give him the settings so that he could use his own equipment, they really wanted him to buy a Neuf box, which I assume is some kind of router.

When I get to France I really want the freedom to be able to use my own router, which is already configured for my network.  I use a lot of VOIp based telephony and am also concerned about ISPs blocking the traffic in their desire to make their customers use their own VOIP offerings. 

Any words of advise would be most helpful thanks.

We are with club internet and are satisfied with the package. I think that most of the larger providers offer telephonie via internet now. For us it has been exceptionally reliable and cheap. To have the club internet telephonie, as well as usual adsl, it is necessary to use their clubinternet box (modem). If you don't want to have their telephonie(VOIP) you can just opt for ADSL (now called "clubinternet1") without modem - I think...??? check on their website www.club-internet.fr or look on www.degrouptest.com to see what other offers are available and check the terms on the company sites. There is information on their website on how to set up an adsl connection manually under win XP and I have copied some other settings below - sorry but I cannot put a link to the info.
There is not a big difference in price for us - we are in a zone non degroupée - it is only 3 euros extra per month for the mostly free and unlimited telephonie.
I can't comment on any other providers.

PS it is a good idea to read carefully the terms and conditions for all the providers as they all have slightly different ways of doing things, charges etc.

> Compte POP (pour Netscape et IE) uniquement le login (ex: jdupont). Attention de tout inscrire en minuscules !
> Compte POP (pour Eudora Light 3): login@pop3.club-internet.fr (ex: jdupont@pop3.club-internet.fr pour le login jdupont). Attention de tout inscrire en minuscules !
> Mot de passe : le mot de passe qui vous a été communiqué par Club-Internet (par exemple abcd1234).

NUMEROS D'ACCES OU NUMEROS DE CONNEXION 



 
Attention :
 
- Pour une connexion manuelle (sans le lanceur Club Internet), pensez bien à inscrire clubint/ devant votre login par exemple clubint/jdupont si votre login est jdupont 
 
- Pour les numéros de téléphone, ne mettez pas d'espaces entre les chiffres 
 
- Si vous passez par un standard téléphonique (exemples : entreprises, hôtels, hôpitaux...) veuillez ajouter le préfixe de sortie  que vous utilisez pour appeler l'extérieur (généralement le 0) suivi d'une virgule et de votre numéro de connexion.
Exemple : 0,0860707070

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply.  the offerings from French ISPs seem more advnaced than the UK and hence a bit more difficult to understand the pitfalls.
