Dog
I was trying for the worlds shortest post. The world's shortest letter, goes back to 1862 in France. The noted writer Victor Hugo had just completed his latest novel, Les Miserables, and was away on a holiday. He was anxious to learn how the book was selling, so he wrote the following letter to his publisher:“?”The publisher was as imaginative as Hugo and shares the record with him for the world's shortest letter, for his reply:“!”A reply that obviously made Hugo happy. What is fascinating is that Victor Hugo is credited with writing the longest sentence ever to appear in a novel Les Miserables. The sentence contains 823 words, 93 commas, 51 semicolons, and 4 dashes, and fills up almost 3 pages before a full point appears!I don't think he had read Amanda McKitterick Ros. ausibattler
From memoryThe shortest words are "a" and "I".The longest word(but has been disputed as being technical and not a word) is apparantly :"Methionylglutaminylarginytyrosylglutamylserylleucylphenylalanylalanylglutaminyll-eucyllysylglutamylarginyllysylglutamylglycylalanylphenylalanyvalylprolylphenylalanyl-valythreonylleucylglycylaspartylprolyglycylisoleucylglutamylglutaminylserylleucyllysyl-isoleucylaspartylthreonylleucylisoleucylglutamylalanylglycylalanylaspartylalanylleucy-lglutamylleucylglycylglycylisoleucylprolylphenylalanylserylaspartylprolylleucelalanyla-spartyglycylprolythreonylisoleucylglutamiylasparaginylalanylthreonylleucylarginylala-nylphenylalanylalanylglycylvalyltheonylprolylalanylglutaminylcysteinylphenylalanygll-utamylmethionylleucyalanylleucylisoleucylarginylglutaminyllysylhistidylprolylthreonyl-isoleucylpriIylisoleucylglycylleucylleucylmethionyltyrosylalanylasparaginylleucylvalyp-henylalanylasparaginyllysylgyycylisoleucylaspartylglutamylphenylalanyltyrosylalanyl-gutaminyllcysteinylglutamyllysylvalylglycylavlylaspartylserylvalylleucylvalylalanylasp-artylvalyprolylvalylglutaminylglutamyllserylalanyprolyphenylalanylarginylglutaminylal-anylalanylleucylarginylhistidylasparaginylvaylalanylprolylisoleucylphenylalanylisoleu-cylcysteinylprolylprolylaspartylalanylaspartylaspartylaspartylleucylleucylarginyglutam-inylisoleucylalanyylseryltyrosylglycylarginylglycyltyrosylthreonyltyrosylleucylleucylser-ylarginylalanylglycylvalythreonylglycylalanylglutamylasparaginylarginylanylalanylleu-cylprolylleucylaspaaginylhistidylleucylvaylalanyllysylleucyllysylglutamyltyrosylasarag-inylglycylphenylalanylglycylisoleucylalanylprolylaspartylglutaminylvalyllysylalanylala-nylisoleucylaspartylalanylalanyglycylalanylalanyglycylalanylisoleucylserylglycyseryla-lanylisoleucylbalyllsylisoleucylisoleucylglutamyyylglutaminylhistidylasparaginylisole-ucylglutamylprolyglutamyllysylmethionylleucylalanylalanylleucyllysylvalylphenylalaby-lvalylglutaminlylprolylmethionyllysylalanylalanylthreonylarginylserine".Don't ask me what it means as it sounds medical terminology!!Trivia persuit 2007
Dog
Antidisestablishmentarianism was the longest non chemical name.I caught a bit of Countdown last week - an old boy that looked a bit like the Inspector in On the Buses was loosing big time to a bright lad in his twenties. It didn't matter what length of word the older man declared the younger man had one or two letters more in his words. His annoyance came out with a lovely bit of humour after the young man declared 9 and the older man when asked triumphantly yet dejectedly declared 10!He only had a 7.
