Benjamin
It might help to know where you are now and what nationality you are as well as who issued your one year visa and where you normally live and if you want a telephone directory to find the numbers for the nearest British and Swiss embassies. Will
If you have a visa for France, then it almost certainly covers the other European countries that are signed up to the Schengen agreement. However, Britain is not one of these, so you would need a separate visa to visit Britain. Switzerland has signed the agreement, but this will not be implemented until November 2008. So the chances are you would be able to enter Switzerland without a visa before that date, as there are few border controls, which would be fine for just a visit, but if you entered it for any other reason you could be in trouble, depending on any conditions and the scope of your visa. As Benjamin says, best to check with the issuer of your visa and the respective embassies.
Ade100
Nationality is a factor but in general, yes for Switzerland and no for the UK. Info on the Schengen countries here: http://www.schengenplus.eu/space.html
