French telephone system

Recommended Posts

Someone will know much more than I but as far as I know tone and pulse refers to the dialling out part of a phone system.   In the old days it was all pulse (when we had rotary dials on the phones) and each "blip" triggered a click of the switch in the exchange.   Tone dialling came along in the mid 70's and is "musical" method of telling the exchange what number you want.  Until fairly recently (maybe still) BT accepted outgoing calls from both systems,  whilst many other carriers only accepted tone dialling.

I don't think it would affect a fax machine in the other direction, but I may be missing something else.   Have you got all three wires of the house system wired up to the fax socket  (in the UK it would be 2/5 and 3,  I think it's 1/3 and 5 in France.    Some machines do need the third wire,  some don't.

As I say,  someone else will know more and correct me if that's all wrong.
