Martin963
My computer appears now to have a program on it called a.exe. From what I can gather this is not good. I don't seem to be able to delete it, nor erase it using CCleaner, and neither AVG or Advanced WindowsCare seem to notice it. ZoneAlarm is stopping it accessing the internet. Can anyone recommend a SIMPLE foolproof removal tool (I can't see anything on the symantec website) or advise generally please...?ThanksM
Kevinmc
Sadly I was infected with something similar a few months ago and I found the simplest (but quiet time consuming) solution was a rebuild of my laptop, using the recovery disk.
Will
Looking up a.exe on Google suggests that it is indeed potentially harmful. This site is one which describes it and has a link to removal instructions (most merely tell you to delete it, without saying how) http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/a.exe-89.html
Martin963
Thanks guys, a rebuild is out of the question (due to my lack of knowledge and indeed patience), and the registry scan recommended is one of those ones that only tells you it's going to cost money AFTER you've installed it, so that's not for me I'm afraid. Any other suggestions - there must surely be a free removal tool....?
Pierre ZFP
you could try doctor Alexwww.doctor-alex.com/ Pretty good at removing most nasties.I've given up on Norton and AVG as Norton hogs resources and AVG takes an age to do its updatesI now use commodo www.commodo.comFree and very effective. You do need a bit of computer savvy to get the best out of it though.
Martin963
Actually I think I may have cracked it. If you go CNTR/ALT/DEL and go to processes and do a forced shutdown of a.exe you can then delete it - seemingly. We'll see, thanks again.
BJSLIV
But its likely to reappear next time you restart......Norton's instructions are thorough if a bit tedious.http://www.symantec.com/en/uk/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-121515-0757-99&tabid=
Danny
Martin, you may find that it reappears after rebooting your machine.I would recommend an online virus scan with http://housecall.trendmicro.com/and http://www.bitdefender.com/world/ click on 'scan online' on the leftfor starters.Danny
Martin963
Thanks for the further advice.Famous last words but after two switch off/on cycles there's no sign of a.exe in the process list. Touch wood I've been lucky....A suivre of coursd
