Russethouse
I'm thinking of buying 'Publisher' but wonder if there are any viable share ware or freeware versions out there ? Any ideas or recommendations?
Mr Coeur de Lion
I'd recommend Corel Draw. Been using it for years, probably costs a similar amount, but imo a very logical and powerful program.
Clair
Have you looked at Open Office Draw?I have not used it, but I understand it is the equivalent to Publisher, as Writer is to Word and Calc is to Excel.http://www.openoffice.org/product/draw.html

Russethouse
That looks good - I may down load it and have a 'play'Thanks !
Will
The 'draw' programs are more like Illustrator; if you want a free program for actual publishing try http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/pageplus/Alternatively, look for older versions of Quark XPress on magazine cover discs. That gives you proper professional-standard DTP.
