Pierre ZFP
Well since you have this problem after a Windoze update I would definitely restore http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/getstarted/ballew_03may19.mspxas it may well be a corrupted ntdll.dllAfter the restore don't take the Windows update untill you have installed Firefox (or Chrome which is better)

AnOther
ntdll.dll is a protected system file so if it becomes corrupted or replaced by another version Windows System File Checker (SFC) should kick in to fix it.You can force SFC by renaming ntdll.dll to say ntdll.dll.BAK and SFC will pop up and ask you to replace the file with an authorised version by inserting your Windows CD or more likely Service Pack 3 CD.As this is just a test to see if the file is damaged and that SFC is working you needn't actually do this, just dismiss SFC by accepting the file change the rename ntdll.dll.BAK back to ntdll.dll.You could also have a look HERE - you are not alone [;-)]
