confused of chalus
Can anyone help solve our problem? We have a three year old Amilo laptop that works fine except that it has lost its sound. It cant be the speakers as we get sound fine through Skype, its just that it runs silent the rest of the time. I'd really like to be able to listen to BBC radio on it. We are computer users, who dont know what goes on in the works, so be gentle! And Simple!Kathy
Pierre ZFP
What operating system? In the meantime, If a microsoft variant, try double click on the volume control on the task bar. This will bring up the sound mixer. Check that nothing has been muted or the control sliders have been set too low.
confused of chalus
Sorry to take so long answering. The operating system is Windows Vista (had to look in wikipedia to find out what an operating system is. That's the level of ignorance you are dealing with). The sound mixer is up to maximum. pachapapa
Microsoft has a Fix It service for lots of problems with an initial written check list and a Diagnostic that can be run to check the PC.Could be quicker than lots of posts. The Fix It for sound link below:http://support.microsoft.com/gp/no_sound

confused of chalus
Tried the diagnostic fix but it found nothing wrong! I think we'll just have to live without sound. At least we dont get that annoying whoop as it fires up anymore![:D]
Mr Coeur de Lion
Go to control panel and then double click on the sounds icon.Have a fiddle there. When you say you have no other sounds, have you tried playing music or a video on your computer? It might just be that the default sounds are switched off (like your whoosh on start up).

Just Chris
Often, various laptop functions are accessed by Function (Fn) keys in combination with one or more others. You may have inadvertently disabled the speakers by accidentally pressing a sequence or combination of keys. Check your manual, if you have one. confused of chalus
Its lovely that you are still trying to help! No, cant hear videos, cd's. But son came over loud and clear from Hong Kong on Skype this afternoon! Control panel claims we are very loud! No, didn't get a manual with the laptop, will get OH to investigate the function keys with the online manual, which we never printed out! Probably be a couple of days if I know him.Kathy
Mr Coeur de Lion
The fact you can hear your son on skype is strange. Means the soundcard is fine.Umm.... in the media player you use to listen to cds, watch movies, etc, has the sound been muted on that?
