dexter
I`m due to complete the purchase of the house I`m buying on the 1st June. I`ve just got off the phone with France Telecom after being told that there is no internet connection in the local area. Perhaps I should have checked before I got this far but as the seller had given me her E-Mail address and the agent has been in contact with her via E-Mail throughout the buying process I assumed there was a connection. This will be my principal residence and allthough I am of an age where we used to get by without internet it is more difficult to do so now. Can anyone sugest how I might be able to overcome this problem or is this likely to be one of my last posts before I return to the dark ages?Dexter
mint
Dexter, it might help if you give an indication of the location as there are many on the Forum who know about these things.

If you don't know her tel #, try to find the number for the nearest mairie.
Albert the InfoGipsy
Dexter,Anywhere that has a telephone land line can get an internet connection via dial-up. It's slooow but lots of people still use it for email and even things like reading forums. If they told you that there was an ADSL or 'broadband' connection available and there ain't then that's another matter. dexter
Thanks for the link claire, It seems (if my very basic French and this dictionary are right) that I will be too far away from the exchange (if thats what it is) to get ADSL. Satalite is available but I know nothing about that, perhaps someone could advise me of the pros and cons of it.Albert , I remember dialup but wouldnt now know how to get it onto my computer. No mention was made or questions asked about broadband connection just that the seller had internet. Theres an old saying,"You shoulndt assume anything because it may make an ass out of you and me" how right it is.Dexter
Albert the InfoGipsy
Dexter,You just need to set up a dial-up account with an ISP and get a modem. The modern external ones connect via USB and need very little setup. Here's Orange on the subject:http://assistance.orange.fr/que-faire-apres-la-souscription-a-un-forfait-bas-debit-856.phpFree seem to have a special deal for those still waiting for ADSL, but there may be limitations:http://www.bestofmicro.com/actualite/10427-free-bas-debit.htmlIf you need to buy a modem try Amazon:http://www.amazon.fr/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_3_9?__mk_fr_FR=%C5M%C5Z%D5%D1&url=search-alias%3Dcomputers&field-keywords=modem+56k&sprefix=modem+56k
