Bugsy
Looks like 'active cables' may work for you Dave.http://www.usbgear.com/usb2_extension_cable/usb-extension-cable.html.
sid
5 metres is the max length according to USB specs. Cables of that length are not often on the shelves of local stores so you'd have to order one from specialist supplier I think. USB is meant to connect local devices (local to the desk). If you want to go further you'll have to use the "booster" which Bugsy has suggested. Some can be chained, and the Maplins one uses CAT5 cable with the booster at each end. Check the specs though as some are only USB 1.1The alternate is an IP camera (Google it) which is a networked device.
