Vpn Problem in 64 bits

Recommended Posts

It's a long shot I know, but I wondered if any of the technical wizards here have any ideas.

I use a VPN connection to access BBC iPlayer. I know about ExpatShield but prefer not to go down that route.

It works perfectly on my old machine (XP, 32 bit) and my netbook (same systems) but my new computer has 64 bits and either Windows7 or Linux (Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot)

as a double boot where I can choose which to use.

I can set up a new VPN connection, and it works as long as it is connected, but once I have disconnected it will not re-connect, even though I have it set to remember all the parametres.

Each time I want to use a VPN connection I have to go through the lengthy business of setting up a new one.

I know it has nothing to do with my provider, as the XP version works perfectly, and it is nothing to do with the Windows/Linux issues because the problem isn't affected by which of those I choose to use.

Is it a 64 bit problem?

I have tried the following on Windows 7

"flushing your DNS is a fix that often works. Do the following in the order they are written

a) Go to Start - Run - type the following (please note that in each case ipconfig is followed by a space)

ipconfig /flushdns > click enter

ipconfig /release all >click enter

ipconfig /renew all > click enter

b) Go to Start - Run - type: netsh interface ip delete arpcache and click enter

c) Click Start, then run, type: netsh int ip reset reset.txt and click enter"

but it doesn't resolve the fact that the connection is impossible to establish a second time.

What VPN client are you using ? is this something that you previously had on XP that you have now installed ?

There were a lot of issue with some VPN clients on 64bit but most have been updated to run on 64 bit. Maybe you just need to download a new version.

I am not using a separate client.

I use the network connection in Windows

1 Open Network and Sharing Center from Control Panel. Then choose Set up a new connection or network.

2 In the next window, choose Connect to a workplace.

3.In the next window, choose Use my Internet Connection (VPN).

4.for server address Type ithe IP address of the server from your welcome email

5.Then enter xxx as the name the connection in the destination name box and click Next.

6. In the next window, enter your user name and password from your

welcome email for the VPN access. And click Create. (Domain should be

left blank)

7. Return to the “Network and Internet” screen where you should see the  connection that you have just set up.

8. Right click on the connection and select Send to Desktop as a shortcut.

9. From this point you can use the xx tv shortcut on your desktop to bring up the login box

I have got it working in Linux since my earlier post..
