I have just reinstated my photobucket account as I wanted to post a photo on the trailer thread, when i try to view albums etc some spam keeps wigglling across my screen saying I have won an ipad or some other such connerie, if I try to close it down it just multiplies and opens many many windows which refuse to be closed, is this normal on photobucket now or something that has crept onto my computer since the anti virus has expired?

Secondly, privacy of images, I had not realised that by posting a link to one image people could then access all my albums and images, or at least I think they can, there are some privacy settings but I am unsure how they work, if you make a folder private does that mean that you then cannot link to one photo only within it?

Is it best to make all folders private and then create a new public one for images that you want to do forum links to?

How do you keep your private photos private or is that a contradiction in terms when using photobucket?

many thanks

I think you will find that once you post your private pictures on photobucket they are no-longer yours!... try deleting one!

The ipad adverts dont close if you click on the red cross, they open a new window, but you can close the new window without it multiplying...its best to just ignore the advert. I would suggest you download one of the excellent FREE anti-virus programs like AVG or AVAST, or even Microsoft Security Essentials

Here is a link to one of my pictures.. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd452/dart1680/sataide.jpg. Can you see other pictures in that album?

I remember now I've had a look. I have a public folder where I load photos that I want to post on this forum for example, and I use the "img" tag. I'm not worried about anyone being able to see other photos tin that folder as they've all been displayed elswhere on the web.

For images that I don't want to share with the world at large I put them in folders which I set the privacy to "private" (click on "Album options"). I never post links to these albums, and they would typically be used for friends and family.

What's not clear, without experimenting, is what would happen to a link for a private album if I posted that on the forum. So I'll do one now... there are two images in my folder, here's one below, can you access any others? Edit: REMOVED

I get a quivering publicity box on the right, headed "Felicitations" but whichever box I click, "oui", "non" or the "x" (close), it just opens a new window which I close immediately. Very annoying, so ignore it.

Sid, I posted your image's location url into my browser and it brought up the image posted in this forum.

I then deleted the image file "sunflower.jpg" and was left with a url ending "forum photos". This brought up a "Private Album Password" signon.  So no, I couldn't access all the images in that album.

So does this one show up and can any of you see any others in the now private folder, they arent really private so if you can see them feel free to describe them.

Please don't let your shiny new computer become infected - from your post it sounds as though there could be something lurking there already.

Download one of the following - completely free ! - and you will be covered from now on.

http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download   - english

http://www.avast.com/fr-fr/free-antivirus-download  - french

There are others equally as good - AVG for one, MSE for another.

This is something I pointed out when I posted the How do I... sticky HERE.

"About Photobucket: The pictures you upload to your Photobucket

album will be public. If your prefer not to have your pictures public,

make your album private."

All my albums private and password-protected, which means they can (should?) only be seen by invite and when I provide the password.

Nice roof! Is that mine? [:D]

"stable door", "horses" and "bolted" immediately spring to mind.
Was that aimed at me Sid?

If so then I like your sense of humour [:D]

It also means that you are able to look, or were able to look (and have a good memory) at my other albums.

If you were referring to my photo, and there is one that exactly fits the description then I am glad that I did not know about the lack of security a couple of years ago when it could really have caused me acute embarassment!

Chancer, that "stable door" comment was aimed at myself!! I didn't see any of your old photos.

I take Clair's point that she had already stated that folders should be "private", in my case I had a set of albums for family/friends stuff which I conveniently used for posting forum photos, totally forgetting that my username (which wasn't a pseudonym) could be seen, and that the folders weren't private. I've deleted the whole lot and created a new account now.

The horse has been caught and the stable door re-bolted!

Twas my guilty conscience then Sid!!

It was Clair's posting which must have been in the back of my mind that prompted me to look carefully at the security aspect when I re-instated the account, I hadnt used it since 2009.

Now that it is no longer a secret this is my roof and stable door:
I have just been playing around and it seems that if you have a private album and you send an E-mail link of just one photo from photobucket to someone else they can then view all the photos in that album!
That's correct. Once access is granted, it is valid for the whole album, though not the whole account .

I tend to group the photos I want to share in a freshly-created album, then provide the password to the other party.
