tonyv
Does anyone know whether it's possible to get Orange to provide a static IP, preferably with a configurable Rdns, on an ADSL connection? Orange is, unfortunately, my only option. My plan would be to set up a number of IP cameras at the chalet, which I could interrogate on-line from the UK. Quillan
No it's not possible but there is a work around. This came up on the forum a few years back and somebody had a solution so you need to do a search on the forum.
tonyv
Thanks, Q. I couldn't find anything using the more obvious search terms, but I'll give it another go.DDNS is probably the solution.
sid
I've often wondered about this. As already stated you can't have static IP addresses with Orange, and in fact I don't think many (if any!) ISPs for home users offer this.I found this: http://www.networkwebcams.co.uk/blog/2007/01/09/dynamic-dns-or-do-i-really-need-a-static-ip-address/ but it's a bit out of my comfort zone! Good luck. Richardbk
Yes you can have a static ipv4 address (I have one on a non-pro home standard internet package) but it is very expensive option(€15/month). However, they DO NOT and WILL NOT make the DNS changes necessary to provide a reverse DNS, even for a pro package. Tried it, been there. :( I guess if you set up as retailer of internet services or are a very large company then they would be obliged to provide rDNS, but this would be a very specialized package.FREE do provide both (although I saw somewhere that static IPv4 might no longer be available). I also see that they are now issuing IPv6 static addresses if required, but then few domestic routers have the firmware to process Ipv6, even though the chipset are often installed.
