Marifrançoise
I've just realized that my Macbook has no ethernet port and I'm not sure that the (non-wireless) printer that I have in France has a USB connection. Is it possible to connect a printer to a Livebox and then access it wirelessly from a PC or a laptop? Thanks. AnOther
If your printer is not WiFi then I'll bet my pension that it's got USB.It may also have an ethernet port and either should allow it to be used with the Livebox. I would use ethernet by preference.
Marifrançoise
Thanks. I know the printer has an ethernet port. That's how I used to connect it to my HP laptop. It's a great printer, but old (I think I got it in 2006) and I don't know about USB. If it will connect usefully to the Livebox and the Mac can see it on the network AND I can download some Mac software from the Canon website, I should be in business. Marifrançoise
And BTW, how much is your pension. :-)
AnOther
Not enough to buy you new printer and I don't get it for another two years yet anyway, call me then [:P]
Dart16
I don't think the livebox will support a USB printer.. just USB memory devices, but the quickest way to be sure is connect it to the livebox and see if it appears in the connected devices. If it doesn't work, the piece of kit you need is one of these...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VONETS-VAP11G-WIFI-BRIDGE-FOR-SKY-ANYTIME-XBOX-PS3-/230629580185
Quillan
It depends on the LiveBox and the firmware revision. You need a LiveBox 1 (sort of wedge shaped), if the firmware is quite old then you need to enter the LiveBox interface by using 192.168.1.1, enter your password then look for Live Printer and switch it on. You should however be aware that there were lots of problems with this function and it was removed from later versions of LiveBox 1 and was never an option with LiveBox 2 (this is the oblong one with the corner cut off).If your printer has an Ethernet connector (RJ45) then as you suggested the best way is to use a cable to the LiveBox and nstall the software on your computer. Danny
for what its worth, if it is a USB printer......http://assistance.orange.fr/partager-une-imprimante-usb-avec-la-livebox-2-47.phpif you don't have the livebox 2, choose another model.Danny
Marifrançoise
Thanks, everybody, and especially for that last link. It looks as if I do have a Livebox 2 and, going to the Canon website, it seems as if I can connect my printer by USB.So I may have 2 options, connect to Livebox (which would in some ways be the most convenient as we have 3 laptops) or direct to the Mac. Marifrançoise
How do I find the http address for my printer? I have typed in every option I could think of (starting with http://livebox) and keep getting a "bad address" error message.
AnOther
If it's being recognised then it will be in 'Connected Devices' at the bottom of the Livebox home page on 192.168.1.1This will not be so if it is connected via USB.

Marifrançoise
Danny, that didn't quite work for me as the example they give for the address for the Livebox is incorrect (you need to use 192.168.1.1. But I did manage to get a connection. The weird thing now is that I can print from my Word and Excel (for Mac) programs, but when I try to print PDFs or directly from a webpage, I get an error message that seems to be specific to Canon printers (mine is a Canon). Will try again tomorrow.Still, thanks. Danny
Good that you are getting somewhere but.... in case it is useful for others too, it seems you are confusing some things.192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.1 or http://livebox is the address of the livebox (i.e. access to the configuration pages of the livebox) and any of these forms should be recognised. They all point to the same place while...192.168.1.1:631 or http://192.168.1.1:631 or http://livebox:631 in just the same way is the address of the printer. The port 631 is being used by the livebox. Something like a street number assigned to the printer.don't know if that helps or just confuses more!Danny
Marifrançoise
Thanks, Danny. For some reason my computer won't accept anything that starts with http:// as a valid address for a printer connection. I'll try adding :631 to the address and see if that helps. I'm getting and 306 Connection Error message when I try to print PDFs and I understand that is common with Canon printers. May have to download another driver. Danny
Is the printer listed in Printers? If you have already managed to print something, I presume it is.It sounds to me like it may be an apple Mac (possibly driver related) issue.see here, down the page referring to network printers.https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1800http://www.orionscache.com/2012/11/adding-network-printers-in-apple-osx/good luckDanny

Marifrançoise
Thanks for trying to help. I did manage to connect from the Mac, but could only print Word and Excel documents (no PDFs and nothing from web pages) and couldn't get any connection at all from the HP laptop.I finally gave in a bought a printer with WIFI. Found a good home for the old printer.
